New Year’s resolutions are usually all about ourselves.

We’re challenging you to help us change that.

Ways to get started:

1.  Read to your kids every night–anything that makes kids happier makes the world a better place!

2. Offer help with homework or tutor a child that is having trouble at school.

3. Join a child mentoring program.

4. Volunteer for a child-focused nonprofit in your area.

We’ll post your ideas daily, so check back for new ways you can make 2010 A New Year for Kids!

What will you do this year?

Post your resolution in the comments!

We’re increasing our concentration on out-of-school time programs – keeping kids off the streets and engaged with creative learning opportunities! We’re also moving forward with a great new service-learning program to teach kids the importance of community service and giving back! Looking forward to 2010.

I will get involved with children’s theatre associations that focus on education and outreach through the arts!

Listen, pay attention and react positively when young people speak so they feel that their opinion counts for something.

Comment by Gennady

I will think of more innovative and effective ways to get the word out about organizations that are helping kids, like America SCORES.

I have a little brother who just became a teen TODAY! For him I hope to be good guidance, a good mentor, older brother and support member. For kids in Chicago I hope to raise funds so that they may continue to enjoy free after-school poetry workshops and soccer practice and games, and more.

I hope to get involved with an organization like AmericaScores. Two of my passions that help children grow!

I understand that children are our most valuable natural resource. I will volunteer at least once a month to ensure the community I live in is better because I’ve chosen to take action.

Perhaps it’s not a resolution per se, but I’ve come to realize I will always work in the realm of youth development, whether I’m volunteering as a tutor, or I work for a youth development organization. It’s hard for me to be passionate about anything else.

I will run a free before-school chess club, teaching elementary school kids how to play.

I will not give up on my most challenging Special Ed students! I will continue to believe that, with the right support, they too can achieve at high levels.

I will do everything I can to help America SCORES expand and offer programming to as many kids as possible in 2010. I, to my core, believe that this model can have a profound effect on children.

I plan to teach one of my students how to read. I plan to help my other four kids learn everything I can teach them. I will try to deal with three troublemakers and not “survive” them. I will keep working as hard as I can!

I plan to work at a summer camp for special needs children!!

I’ll recruit 3 new mentors to the organization I volunteer with to help keep kids on the right track to college!

I will raise funds for a great organization, volunteer with a children’s arts organization, and I would like to write a children’s story before the end of the year!

Comment by Tammy

I will help coach a local girls’ soccer team two-three days per week and enjoy seeing the players grow as teammates and athletes.

Comment by Robbie

I will raise funds and then race Philly’s Broad Street Run in honor of an agency that provides mental and behavioral health services to kids who have been abused and neglected, have suffered other trauma, and who have problems with early childhood development.

Comment by Stephanie

I’m a physician, and I will give free physicals to kids in my community, allowing them to join the “head start” program.

Comment by Laura

I will spend MLK Service day volunteering with an organization that supports homeless students. I will volunteer my time with a few local youth poetry slams hosted by different nonprofits.

Comment by Brian

I will volunteer 4 hours/week at a nonprofit that provides free childcare service for children of immigrants.
